Kapok
Light by nature.
Kapok is a naturally light and airy fibre harvested from the seed pods of the kapok tree, which grows freely in tropical forests. The trees are not subject to mass cultivation and require neither artificial irrigation nor pesticides, allowing them to thrive naturally within their environment.
The fibre is collected once the pods mature and open, through a careful manual process carried out by local farmers. This low-impact harvesting method supports local communities while preserving both the tree and its surrounding ecosystem. As a result, kapok is a renewable, biodegradable and plant-based material with a minimal environmental footprint throughout its life cycle.
Known for its exceptional lightness, kapok consists of hollow fibres that trap air while remaining breathable. This structure provides gentle insulation while allowing excess heat and moisture to escape, helping the material feel warm in cooler conditions and light and breathable when temperatures rise.
Kapok is naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to mould, mildew and dust mites. It does not require chemical treatments to remain clean, making it a health-positive choice well suited for sensitive environments and those with allergies.
At L’Artisanat, kapok is valued for its purity, lightness and quiet performance. We choose this material for its ability to add softness and volume while remaining breathable, responsibly sourced and respectful of both people and planet.
